I recently ordered several automatic watches with skeleton movements, as I’m an avid collector and had never owned a true skeleton watch in the past (though I have several with transparent case backs). In the main I’ve been mostly disappointed with the selection I ordered as they all came from brands with little or no heritage and appeared to have been made without much care or precision. This one from Georgio Milano, though, is better than most I’ve tried.I’m unfamiliar with this brand, but from what little I can find online I see that the company has been operating since the mid-90s and uses Japanese movements. From the look of the styling across their range I get the impression Milano is more about styling than precision, more of a fashion house than a traditional watchmaker, and that’s what comes across in the interesting but fairly busy design of this watch. There’s a lot going on here. The hour and minute numbers are in two different typefaces, and the markers themselves are interrupted a little by the oversized numbers. It’s not a bad design, but when you throw in the visible movement it’s all a bit much.The movement is what saves this watch, as it’s the best of the examples I’ve seen (at least visually). The balance wheel is clearly visible without much in the way, and at its 5 o’clock position is a small silver cog that turns along with it. Throw in the fact that at some points it’s possible to see through the watch and out the transparent case back and you have a pretty interesting movement.Do I think this is a great watch that you’ll pass on to the next generation? Nah. Do I think it’s an interesting novelty to add to your collection? Sure.
